- Senior Legal Counsel
Description
Are you passionate about upholding the rule of law and safeguarding Bermuda’s financial integrity? Do you have the experience and judgment to provide expert legal guidance in a dynamic, high-stakes environment? The Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its leadership team, reporting directly to the Director of the FIA. This is a pivotal role supporting Bermuda’s ongoing efforts to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
As Senior Legal Counsel, you will advise on complex legal and policy matters that underpin the FIA’s statutory responsibilities and international obligations. You will interpret and apply Bermuda’s AML/CFT/CPF legislation, represent the FIA in regional and international forums, and ensure legal and procedural compliance in the Agency’s operations. You will also assist in shaping policy and legislative development, draft and review agreements and memoranda of understanding, and act as the Director when required.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a senior legal professional with a strong foundation in financial crime prevention and regulatory law who is ready to play a leading role at the centre of Bermuda’s national AML/CFT framework.
What We’re Looking For:
We are particularly interested in candidates who bring:
- A minimum of 8 years’ post-qualification experience in legal practice, with exposure to compliance, civil, criminal, corporate, trusts, asset tracing, and forfeiture matters.
- Advanced knowledge of Bermuda’s AML/CFT/CPF legislation and international standards, including FATF standards and assessor training (mandatory).
- Qualification as a Barrister & Attorney in Bermuda (or eligibility for admission).
- Proven ability to provide timely and practical legal advice in a fast-paced, confidential environment.
- Experience liaising with agencies such as the Bermuda Police Service, Customs Department, BMA, and international FIUs.
- Strong drafting, analytical, and communication skills, with sound professional judgment and high ethical integrity.
- Prior experience in international cooperation and attendance at CFATF, Egmont, or related AML/CFT events (advantageous).
Why Join the FIA?
- Contribute directly to Bermuda’s leadership in global efforts to combat financial crime.
- Work alongside skilled professionals at the intersection of law, intelligence, and regulation.
- Represent Bermuda in regional and international legal and policy forums.
- Develop your expertise in a mission-driven agency dedicated to national and international security.
